Tod attended St John's College, Oxford, graduating in 1901, then spent 4 years at the British School in Athens, in 1902 having been appointed Assistant Director and Librarian of the School. During WWI, from 1915-1919, he was an interpreter and officer in the Intelligence Corps in Salonika. A Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford from 1903 to 1947, he was appointed Reader in Greek Epigraphy at Oxford from 1927-1947.
