 Series
Reference Code: GBR/3437/JMRD/3

Scope and Contents

Working files which document the transcription and translation of ancient Greek and Latin incriptions from Cyrenaica. This region is located in eastern Libya, during the Roman period it was also called the Pentapolis (Five Cities) and is geographically located on the plateau of the Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain), flanked to the west by the Gulf of Sidra (the Greater Syrtis), to the north by the Mediterrnean.
JMR collaborated closely with Richard Goodchild on the corpus and the files include correspondence between them. John Chadwick was consulted for his insight into obscure vocabulary or grammar. Other correspondents include Jocelyn Toynbee,

Arrangement

JMR consecutively used three different sorts of numbering systems to order her working files, from the 1950s onwards. The final system she used has been retained and employed as the means by which the series has been arranged. There are gaps in the runs of numbers, for reasons unknown. Eventually a concordance will be created between these files and the inscriptions as published in the on-line resource Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica 2020 https://iryr2020.inslib.kcl.ac.uk/en/

Physical Description

Typescript and handwritten notes, often on fragile onion-skin paper or re-used paper on the verso of student essays. The poor quality of much of the paper used renders most of these files very fragile. All stright pins and paprclips have been removed and replaced with brass paperclips. The contents of each orginal hanging file, formerly suspended in a filing cabinet, has been transferred to an archival folder, thereby retaining the original order.
