Islands, 1908 - 1910
Scope and Contents
The thematic reach of this group, designated as 'Islands' before the time of its accession to the archives, is actually very mixed in topic. The core of the images is undoubtedly a collection of photographs designated as 'Islands' in their theme by AJBW himself. However, there are also images of the British School at Athens tennis courts, an excavation site pre WWI with an Edwardian achaeologist overseeing Greek workmen, a cutting that reveals possibly a Mycenaean tomb, a young Greek? woman wearing a sumptous silk damask gown.
One photgraph has written on the verso by AJBW in black ink, 'Near Vardhakes...' with a long description following.
Other photographs may or not be located to an island - ruined towers, ancient walls, stone sculpture in situ on the ground. The photographs that distinctively feature islands - albeit unindentified ones - feature street scenes in provinchal town settings, the exterior and interior of churches, landscapes with terraced fileds, and views of coastline and mountains.
