Scope and Contents

The draft has no recipient and is not signed by Pitt. In it Pitt puts himself forward for the vacant office of High Steward of the University of Camrbidge. A manuscript note on the reverse in another hand records this as a draught [sic] letter for the Office of High Steward.

Biographical / Historical

First recorded in 1418, the High Steward was (and mutatis mutandis is) an eminent person so honoured by the University of Cambridge in the expectation of their support at court. He or she has a Deputy, elected by the Regent House. Pitt did secure the Office, taking over upon the death of Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke who held the position from 1764-1790. Pitt was succeeded by Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, who took over upon Pitt's death in 1806 and held the postion until 1834.
