Biographical / Historical
George Pretyman Tomline (1750-1827) attended Pembroke College, matriculating in 1768. He was latterly elected a Fellow and was Pitt's Tutor when he came up in 1773. They developed a strong friendship and in 1784, when Pitt became Prime Minister, he appointed Pretyman as his Private Secretary. In 1785 Tomline was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1787, Pitt appointed Pretyman Bishop of Lincoln and in 1820 he was translated to Bishop of Winchester. Pretyman and Pitt remained friends and Pretyman continued to advise Pitt on finance. He died at Kingston Hall, near Wimborne, Dorset and was buried in Winchester Cathedral.

Arrangement
It is thought the letters were mainly found and removed from George Pretyman Tomline's notes in January 1935. Where additional provenance information is available it has been added to the individual catalogue entries. At some point all the College's 'Pitt Letters' were grouped together. The letters were listed in 2011 and this catalogue is based on the work and arrangement done by G. Clowes at that time. Additional provenance information may be found in the Archivist's Office.
