Letter from Bishop Selwyn to Mrs. W. Selwyn, Wellington, 1842-09-13
Scope and Contents
Natives in Nelson; illnesses Copy; With illustration of proposed houses (hostelry) at Nelson for use of natives. This is a copy of Bishop Selwyn’s letter to his mother describing his proposal to build a hostel for Maori visiting their relatives in Nelson, a chapel and a boarding school with income from the Natives Tenths Reserves. This was an agreement set up by the New Zealand Company whereby one-tenth of all land purchased from Maori would be set aside for the benefit of the Maori vendors. He left one of his fellow clergymen, Mr. Reay, who had come with him from England, to oversee the project. The chapel was never built though lack of funds.
