Scope and Contents

Comprises letters and papers chiefly of George Augustus Selwyn and also of his wife, Sarah Selwyn as well as Edward Coleridge and William Charles Cotton among others. The collection includes diaries of GAS, 1841-4 and 1857; a letterbook, 1840-60; and correspondence, 1831-72, including letters to Edward Coleridge, 1842-65, and correspondence of William Charles Cotton, 1841-7; sermons 1835-1878; also sketches and photographs; also a vellum manuscript from people connected with G. A. Selwyn whilst in New Zealand congratulating him on his appointment as Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry

Biographical / Historical

George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878) was born in Middlesex on 5 April 1809, the second son of William Selwyn and Laetitia Frances Kynaston. He was educated at Eton and St John's College, Cambridge, 1827-31. He was a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, 1833-40; assistant master at Eton; and tutor to the sons of Lord Powis. He was ordained deacon, 1833, and priest, 1834, and served as a curate at Windsor, 1833-41. He married Sarah Harriet Richardson, 25 June 1839. He was first bishop of New Zealand, 1841-68, and bishop of Lichfield, 1868-78. He died in Lichfield, 11 April 1878.

Arrangement

The letters follow the system of arrangement compiled during the Australian Joint Copying Project in the 1970s.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The College Archives received a grant from the Pilgrim Trust in c. 1993 to rehouse the Selwyn Papers in special boxes and wallets and the work was undertaken by the Library Assistant, Debbie Price
