Name cards and change of address cards for Joseph Needham, c.1924-1995

Scope and Contents One card is for King's Avenue, Clapham Park and bears the armorial crest of the Needham family (a phoenix in flames) with the motto 'Nunc Aut Nunquam' (Now or Never). Early cards are for 'Dr Joseph Needham, Caius College, Cambridge' and later cards give the address of the Needham Research Institute. Two name cards with different affiliations, written in Chinese characters with no English translation, date from the years 1943-1946 when he worked for the Sino-British Science Cooperation Office...

Scope and Contents

The cards sent from Gonville and Caius College by M.R. Mitchell, Niall Quinn and A.P. Bretscher have handwritten notes of acceptance for invitations to dine with Joseph Needham and Dorothy Needham at the Master's Lodge. They may have been kept as examples of the college crest or intended to be re-used as dividers for his lantern slides or card catalogues.
