Scope and Contents

The medal is held in its original box. On the back of the medal is an image of the Buddhist pilgrim Xuanzang 玄奘. Inside is an inscription on paper in Joseph Needham’s handwriting which states: ‘from Hou Jen-Chih [Hou Renzhi 侯仁之] geographer and Mrs Hou 9 July 84’.
