The medal is held in its original box. It is held on a red, gold and yellow ribbon. It is not dated but a corresponding certificate is dated 15 Nov. 1990. The certificate states that the honorary title of Friendship Ambassador was conferred on Joseph Needham, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, for his ‘outstanding contribution to the promotion of understanding and friendship between the peoples of China and Great Britain’.
