One mask has a handwritten note inside stating: 'To Joseph Needham F.R.S. F.B.A. In honor of his eightieth birthday from Carole Sivin 1980 "Butter side down"'. The second mask has an inscription engraved into the clay: 'Dr Joseph Needham. Old man C.S. 85'.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

One of the masks of Joseph Needham and one of Carole Sivin were sent by Marta Hanson from Baltimore in May 2011. The Needham Research Institute holds photographs of Carole Sivin making the masks during a visit to the UK.
