Bronze Han crossbow trigger, 1952
Scope and Contents
1 metal object and 11 paper items. Writing (in Joseph Needham’s handwriting) on the box says it is actually a Ming 明 dynasty copy. Needham bought it in July 1952 at Liulichang 琉璃廠 in Beijing while with Ji Chaoding 冀朝鼎. With the crossbow trigger are also: the purchase receipt dated 3 July 1952; the price label; the store’s name card (Yunkuchai Curio Store 韵古齋); a fragment of a label that was on the trigger, suggesting prior ownership; 1 postcard and 5 sheets of notes and drawings relating to the trigger.
