Slippers for bound feet, c.1984
Scope and Contents
The cardboard box contains 4 fabric slippers in a plastic bag and 3 paper notes. The inscription on two notes (probably in Joyce Engel-Cowper’s handwriting) read:
'From the collection of Dr D. Engel
A pair of Chinese slippers for a woman with bound feet - bought in the market'
And:
'From the collection of Dr. D. Engel
A pair of Chinese slippers presented by a Chinese gentleman
(see p.184 of Dr. Engel’s memoirs - “pages from a surgeon’s diary”'
The third note is a typed summary of this information.
