Four photographs showing the face and reverse of a Chinese geomantic compass presented to the Cambridge Astronomical Observatory by Mrs John Couch Adams, 1948-06-04
Scope and Contents
Two of the photographs are reproduced as Figures 340 and 341of 'Science and Civilisation in China, Volume 4, Part 1'. At the foot of the one of the photographs, Joseph Needham notes 'Mr Yu says this form of compass was and is continually used by astrologers and geomancers, and that it must still be quite common in China. He says the outside ring gives the degress of the 28 constellations'.
