This letter is written in Chinese on stationery for Zi ran ke xue shi yan jiu suo 自然科 学史研究所 (Institute of the History of Natural Science). Hua Chüeh-Ming mentions that he encloses his book on Chinese bronze bells and notes recent archaeological discoveries of bell sets in the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, in Suixian, Hubei, and in a Chu tomb in Xichuan, Henan, dating from the Warring States or Spring and Autumn period, proving the existence of a 7-note scale at such an early date. He looks forward to meeting Joseph Needham at the end of August at the History of Science conference.
