Correspondence and other documents relating to the possible introduction of herds of Auchenidae (llamas, vicunas, alpaccas and guanacos) into the moutainous regions of West China and Tibet, 1957-04-24 - 1966-05-17
Scope and Contents
The correspondence comprises a letter from Ben F. Blankenship of San Francisco, California, U.S.A., to 'The Broadsheet' [edited by Liao Hung-Ying, Mrs Derek Bryan], about the potential of the introduction of Auchenidae to China and the already sucessful introduction of Quinoa; letter from Blankenship to Bryan, accompanying data to support his belief that Auchenidae could be sucessfully introduced to China; copy of a letter from Joseph Needham to Dr. Kuo Mo-Jo [郭沫若 / Guo Moruo] of Academia Sinica, written to introduce the idea and accompany copies of the supporting information sent by Blankenship; letter from Blankenship to Needham, forwarding information about the Auchenidae and discussing the practicalities of obtaining some animals for China; letter from Blankenship to Needham, asking if any response had been received from the Chinese Academy of Sciences; copy of Needham's reply stating that no acknowledgment has been received; letter from Kuo acknowleding receipt of the information.
Information sent by Blankenship comprises copies of parts of 3 letters from Blankenship to Henry Chien of Hong Kong, explaining the potential for Auchenidae farming in China; letter from [?] of the United States Department of Agriculture to Blankenship, describing the different types of Auchenidae and their wool; copy of a letter from Irene H Kittredge of the National Wool Trade Association, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., providing import figures for Auchenidae wool into the U.S.A. in 1962; table showing 'U.S. imports of Alpaca, Llama and Vicuna Hair', 1960-1962; copy of a speech by Henry Schlomm, President of Amicale Yarns, Inc. and Woosocket Spinning Co., New York City, U.S.A., entitled 'Cashmere, Cashmere Blands, Vicuna, Camel Hair & Iceland Wool', (24 April 1957); fact sheets supplied by the Wool Bureau, Inc., New York City, U.S.A., on alpaca, guanaco, llama and vicuna; newspaper advertisement for a 'genuine alpaca' sweater available at Roos/Atkins Stores in California; photocopies of 3 'Daily News Record' articles entitled 'Prices for Alpaca Increase Due to its use in Sweaters;, Natural Fibers are Blend-bred with a Test Tube', 'Wools of the World'; letter from Victor Penazola of the Ministry of Agrculture, Bolivia, requesting $65 for relevant reports, books, bulletins and magazines; cutting of a newspaper article entitled 'Havana Tobacco Has New Home: Honduras'; cutting of a 'San Francisco Sunday Chronicle' article entitled 'The Global Wildlife Crisis', referring to the movement of species of animals between different regions of the world; 2 postage stamps from Peru showing the vicuna.
