Joseph Needham describes the visit in his letter to Dorothy Needham dated 1 September 1952, and adds further details in his letter of 18 September 1952. They set out from Beijing with 'some Burmese and Indonesians', but get stuck on the way, so decide to walk with Rewi's handyman (Lao Shao) and an Indonesian man to the tombs, on the way meeting meeting 'two charming farm boys, 14 and 16'.
The exact tomb(s) visited have yet to be identified.
