'Nanking ware' crackle glaze five-colour sword-and-horse double-eared vase with bronze effect banding 成化年哥釉五彩刀马人双耳花瓶, c.1900-1920 [Chenghua period 成化年间]
Scope and Contents
This is a multicoloured ceramic crackle pattern 'Nanking ware' Chinese vase. The vase is decorated with soldiers in red and green glaze. There is a 2cm wide etched bronze effect border near the base and decorated bronze effect ring further up the vase below the neck, bronze effect lugs on either side of the neck, and bronze effect mouth rim. The underside has a small brown square, incised with what may be a simplified representation of the the reign mark 'Cheng hua nian zhi 成化年製' (Chenghua reigned 1464-1487). Little information is available about it, but this ceramic and others in the same style appear to have been made in Nanjing from the early to mid 20th century, making it likely that they belonged to Lu Gwei-Djen 魯桂珍, who was from Nanjing.
