Colourful Yongzheng period jar showing a baby and maid 五彩婴戏侍女罐 with a lid and wooden base, c.1722-1735 [Yongzheng year system 雍正年制]
Scope and Contents
This is a coloured jar decorated with children in traditional Chinese dress and ornaments playing in a garden. It has the reign mark Yongzheng nian zhi 雍正年制 (Made in the Yongzheng era) [1722-1735] on the base. The lid found with it is probably not original as there are similar objects online for sale all without lids. The pot is glued to a wooden base. It was used as a container by Joseph Needham, as it was found filled with 32 pieces of string, one bit of cotton, and one net.
