Scope and Contents

This is a replica of the shu fu ding li 叔父丁鬲 ritual food vessel. The original dates from the mid Western Zhou, and is in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The vessel has 'a rounded body with contracting mouth and three feet decorated with transverse strips' (description supplied by National Palace Museum, Taipei). The characters shu fu ding (叔父丁) are cast inside the mouth of the vessel, hence the name. The logo of the National Palace Museum, Taipei is on the base.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Given to Joseph Needham by Dr Wu Ta-yu (Wu Dayou 吳大猷), Academia Sinica, Taipei in 1984 during his visit to Taiwan.
