Replica of a Spring and Autumn period bronze two-tone bell (niu zhong 鈕鐘) with xing tai decor, 1984?
Scope and Contents
This is a replica of a niu 钮 type two-tone bronze bell (bian zhong 編鐘). The original dates from the Spring and Autumn period and is in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The bell is 'decorated with xing tai and coiling serpent designs' (description supplied by the National Palace Museum, Taipei). These bells are called 'two-tone' because they resound with a different tone when struck on the front and near the side. This one plays notes G#5 and B5.

Given to Joseph Needham by Dr Wu Ta-yu (Wu Dayou 吳大猷), Academia Sinica, Taipei in 1984 during his visit to Taiwan.
