Joseph Needham’s file title is ‘Confidential long-term matters / Jap invtn / Nobel’. It contains correspondence and administrative papers relating to offers to Joseph Needham of academic positions, invitations to lecture or attend meetings, membership and resignation of the Athenaeum Club 1949-53, correspondence with the Nobel Foundation regarding deposit of Joseph Needham’s books in the library of the Caroline Institute (he had been nominated in 1947 as a candidate for the Medicine and Physiology section award for 1948), and a proposed scientific mission to Japan in 1947. A sub-file entitled ‘Yale job and Readership’ contains correspondence and handwritten notes relating to his possible appointment to the Chair of Biochemistry at Yale University in 1935 and the question of payment to Joseph Needham as a Reader, Stipendiary Fellow and Demonstrator in 1935.
