This file contains obituaries for Ernest Baldwin (1909-1969) and an order of service for a memorial service on 4 Mar. 1970, Joseph Needham’s drafts for the obituary printed in Nature (Vol.225, No.5232), and a letter sent by Joseph and Dorothy Needham to The Times about the life of Ernest Baldwin published 18 Dec. 1969.
The file also contains correspondence relating to Joseph Needham’s resignation from the Sir William Dunn Readership in Biochemistry from the date when he became Master of Gonville and Caius College in 1966 (including his handwritten draft letter of resignation to the Secretary General of the Faculties, W.J. Sartain). Also notes for his speech, menu and seating plan for a dinner in honour of Malcolm Dixon, R. Hill and Joseph Needham on 29 Apr. 1966. Correspondence includes discussions about the numbers of lectures given by Joseph Needham in the academic year 1948-49, reduced lecture hours in the Department of Biochemistry Natural Sciences Tripos Part II in 1957 and the possibility of transferring from a University Readership to a Senior Research Fellowship at Gonville and Caius College in 1964.
