Joseph Needham’s file title is ‘HoS Chair UCL’. It relates to a vacancy at University College, London in 1955, also a brief correspondence about a possible role for Joseph Needham at a proposed department of the History of Science and Technology at Imperial College, London. It contains correspondence (including with J.B.S. Haldane, B. Ifor Evans, Charles Singer and Dorothea Singer), also Joseph Needham’s handwritten notes in which he considers accepting the position if offered to him. Correspondence dated 19 Mar. 1945 to 28 May 1945 between J.B.S. Haldane at University College, London and Joseph Needham in Chungking, China proposes that he might consider the new post of Chair of ‘The history and method of science’ at University College, London. It also includes a typescript memorandum from Lu Gwei-Djen to W. Farr (Head of the UNESCO Bureau of Personnel) ‘concerning P4 Post “Coordination of Field Science Cooperation Offices at Headquarters”’ dated 2 Jan. 1955 and a letter from Lu Gwei-Djen to Joseph Needham dated 21 Dec. 1954 outlining future opportunities for her at UNESCO.
