Joseph Needham was not able to attend the symposium held at Rice University, Houston, Texas 25-27 Sep. 1987. He submitted his First Julian Huxley Memorial Lecture to be read aloud by another person. It is not clear from the correspondence whether that happened, but it was promised that the lecture would be published in the proceedings of the symposium.
