This file contains correspondence and photocopies of newspaper and magazine articles relating to demonstrations by the Chinese Democratic Movement, which culminated in a confrontation and deaths in Tiananmen Square, Beijing on 4 Jun. 1989.
Correspondents include Peter Lisowski, Arthur Clegg, Terry Cannon, and Derek Bryan and organisations include the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in the UK, Amnesty International British Section, Key Centre for Asian Languages and Studies, June 4th China Support, Comité International Contre La Répression En Chine, China Support Group, Centre for Modern Chinese Studies, the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation Ltd., the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding Ltd., and the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine.
The file also includes a photocopied letter from Joseph Needham to Li Peng (Premier of the State Council, Beijing) dated 6 Mar. 1989 appealing for the release of Wei Ching-Sheng [Wei Jingsheng 魏京生] and other prisoners.
