 File
Reference Code: GBR/1928/NRI/NRI2/9/2/3

Scope and Contents

The file contains boards with photographs of embryology slides relating to hens’ eggs, typed captions and handwritten corrections. Joseph Needham has written notes on several of the boards, for example: ‘Plate 9: Yolk of hen’s egg at time of laying, stained with Kossa’s method for the detection of calcium phosphate. Note the considerable variations in the vitelline globules. Magnification 6xD, prepared and microphotographed by Dr. V. Marza’. Joseph Needham wrote the initial ‘V’.
Iași , also referred to historically as Jassy, is the second largest city in Romania.
A note on the first board states: ‘Dr Needham’.
Vitellus refers to the yolk of an egg or ovum.
