Bizen ware sake bottle and tea cup, 1984?
Scope and Contents
Bizen ware is a type of Japanese pottery identifiable by its reddish-brown colour and markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing.
These objects are:
1) 備前長徳利 Bizen naga tokkuri (a long sake bottle in the Bizen style) made by the artist 小林孝章 Kobayashi Takaaki at the 天心窯 Tenshin gama (the Kiln of the Heavenly Heart).
The explanation that came with this ceramic states that it was created after the establishment of Fujiwara Takeshi Ceramics Institute (藤原健陶芸研究所). The Institute was established in 1978 so Joseph Needham may have purchased it during his visit to Japan in 1984.
2) 備前茶碗 Bizen chawan (a tea cup in the Bizen style. The last character is unclear, it may be 盃, made by the artist 中村勉 Nakamura Tsutomu.
They are held in two wooden boxes with removable lids. Leaflets in Japanese are held in each of the boxes.
