They are recordings of the Chinese Yueju opera Liang shan bo yu Zhu ying tai 越劇 梁山伯與祝英台. Full title: 第一屆全國戲曲觀摩演出獲獎節目梁山伯與祝英台. 華東越劇試驗劇團, 范瑞娟 傅全香. 中國唱片 53015-53019. 中國唱片厰出品.
They were issued as part of the World Collection of Recorded Folk Music, issued with the Assistance of UNESCO, Records 21-25.
The records are held in paper sleeves. The box also contained 14 paper sleeves with no records inside.
The records have been re-housed for conservation reasons but the lid has been retained.
All are without a recording date, except for NRI2/8/16/1/3/6, which is November 1954. This indicates that Joseph Needham probably acquired all (except NRI2/8/16/1/3/8) during his 1958 visit to China.
