Letters from Miss Josephine Coning to Julia Pleister: File 1, 1951 - 1953
Scope and Contents
This file includes letters referring to a tribute to Sarah Walker, former principal of Darlington Training College [a teacher training college for over 100 years which closed in 1978], to be compiled for the college’s Southlands Magazine. There are also letters discussing the establishment of an annual lecture in Sarah Walker’s memory and suitable candidates to deliver it. The letters also make reference to Miss J W T Thomas (former Vice-Principal), Miss E F Henser and Lady Starmer. Letters of 29 May and 6 August 1953 refer to Julia Pleister being in Cambridge, the latter letter noting that Josephine is ‘amused that Cambridge dons attracted you less than Cambridge’.
This file also contains a letter written by Bernard Linney, 10 November 1965, for the benefit of ‘Close friends of my sister-in-law (E Josephine Coning), setting out a copy of a poem [entitled ‘A Printer’s Greeting’] written by her at Xmas 1937 ‘in Chaucerian manner’ arising from her contact with the printing fraternity’ (ie her work with William Sessions Ltd in York – the poem is included in ‘The History of a Printing House’, Ebor Press 1965).
