WINGS, 1984 - 1987
Scope and Contents
WINGS [Work Information Network for Girls at School] aimed to ‘encourage girls to widen their career horizons to consider non-traditional jobs - - - also to encourage girls to consider the importance of economic independence for women, no matter what occupation they choose’. The group was set up to operate as a collective, holding regular meetings, most of them at the Cambridge Women’s Resource Centre, 7c Station Road. Limited resources were concentrated on Sawston Village College to begin with, by holding a first ‘Careers Event’ there on 13 October 1984. Liz Acton spoke at this event. Later events were held at Chesterton School, Netherhall School and many other Cambridgeshire schools. By 1985, there was a clear sub-network of engineers in the group, including Liz Acton.
There is no obvious indication in these papers of what became of the group after 1986, although there is a list of dates for events to be held in 1987 at the end of File 4.
The papers collected by Liz Acton and listed here include minutes, papers and correspondence of the group (Files 2-4), and general materials (File 1). Although she appears to have attended few meetings, Liz Acton appears to have been actively involved in the group's work from the start.
