Two letters written by Alfred Tennyson [later 1st Baron Tennyson, Poet Laureate], 1849 - 1999
Scope and Contents
1) Autograph letter signed A.T., postmarked 15 January 1849, dated 'Sunday', addressed to 'Dear Mally', envelope addressed 'Miss Matilda Jesse at Mrs Tennyson's, James's Square, Cheltenham' (but said in an accompanying note to be to to Sophia ('Fee'), daughter of William Jesse. 2) Autograph letter signed A. Tennyson, dated Sep. 21st 1864, addressed to 'Dear Mrs Freer [Rose Freer, sister of Richard Jesse, who married Emily Tennyson, Alfred's sister] - AT agrees to be godfather to Mary Emily Tennyson, youngest daughter of Rose Freer. Together with related correspondence with A C T Brotherton, 1965, and some biographical details relating to 1) William Jesse and his children; 2) Emily Tennyson (sister of Alfred) and her children; 3) Mary Emily Tennyson Brotherton (nee Freer) (goddaughter of AT and mother of A C T Brotherton and grandmother of Carola Brotherton, New Hall alumna) and her children and grandchildren, 1999.
