Interview no. 13, 2002-05-15
Scope and Contents
JENNY HALL, interviewed 15/05/02 (58 min): Jenefer Hall, College Nurse from ? until ?, recalls several early Fellows of New Hall, and speaks of being given SCR rights and Dining rights herself. She comments on Fellows’ ambivalence to her position in College, and how her SCR rights were later removed. She speaks of joint provisions for pastoral care with Fitzwilliam College, including a shared Chaplain.
She recalls her setting up of Sick Bay, and her long hours 'on call'. She remembers that she had to act as an informal counsellor to girls with both physical and mental health problems, and also supported many Fellows in their own health problems.
She remembers Fellows who died, and a few fatalities among students. Illness was not disclosed as readily in the 1970s as in the 21st century. She suggests that some major health and personality problems could have been recognised at the undergraduate admission stage. Eating disorders were common, but not well understood. There were few problems with drug-taking but many more with alcoholic drink .She describes reactions to, and strategies for coping with, undergraduate pregnancies. She had to support students who had been raped.
