JANET MOORE, interviewed 10/05/01 (63 min): reviews NH’s admissions policy for undergraduates in 1960s and 1970s, including the entrance paper and selection process, including interviews; draws on her own experience as Admissions Tutor, including effect of mixed colleges in 1972 and end of Cambridge Colleges Exam in mid-80s; speaks also of graduate admissions; recalls her period as Senior Tutor including implications of Rosemary Murray’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor; comments on changes in NH over her long period of involvement, and on some aspects of the Fellowship, including salaries.
JOAN WHEELER-BENNETT, interviewed 10 May 2001 (38 minutes): speaks of her involvement in fund-raising for early NH, from context of her interest in the Third Foundation Association; as alumna of one of the Seven Sisters colleges in USA, she made appeals to Seven Sisters graduates, particularly those living in London; to enhance donations she took advantage of covenant schemes and exchange restrictions imposed on US women living in UK at that time; comments on the continuing financial constraints on women’s institutions and schools, and gender issues for academics; encourages NH to promote alumna giving, including gifts-in-kind.
CATHERINE BELSEY, interviewed 10 May 2001 (93 minutes): recounts circumstances of her appointment as Research Fellow in 1969; relates her struggle with low income, mentioning several Fellows and their reactions to her campaign for enhanced salaries; recalls early teaching experiences, elaborate tutorial system at NH, and her involvement with revitalised prospectus; speaks about distinctiveness of NH, including buildings both at Silver Street and on Huntingdon Road site; mentions political dissent and feminism during 1970s, and also what she learned from students; recalls fear engendered by Cambridge Rapist.
