Scope and Contents
4: 26 June 1999 (38 minutes): ROBIN HAMMOND, a founder fellow of New Hall, is interviewed with her niece, CAROLINE BARKER BENNETT, alumna, in an informal conversation that includes a variety of aspects of New Hall's history. Robin recalls her appointment, and the early days at The Hermitage, including domestic staff. She compares New Hall with Girton, where she was a Member of High Table. Caroline remembers the distinctiveness of New Hall, including the innovative architecture, and recalls social activities for undergraduates. She met the Queen Mother during the royal visit to mark the opening of the new buildings. Advantages and disadvantages of single-sex colleges are discussed.
5: SARAH NEWMAN, interviewed 18 July 1999 (93 minutes): SN recalls her 1964 interview for New Hall Librarian, transition from Silver Street premises to Huntingdon Road site, including accommodation (Beaufort House, Bredon House and the Hermitage) and dining arrangements; comments on building and design of Library; refers to support from other Cambridge colleges, including donations; opening by the Queen Mother; effects of the Royal Charter and Rosemary Murray’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor; recalls Fellows from early days, and comments on differences between New Hall then and now.
