Biographical / Historical

The Association to Promote a Third Foundation for Women in the University of Cambridge, commonly known as the Third Foundation Association, was formed in July 1952 to work towards the establishment of a third college for women, in addition to Girton and Newnham, in order to increase the number of undergraduate places for women in Cambridge. The foundation of New Hall in 1954 was the direct result of the work of the association, while a breakaway group which had originated in the Dining Group (founded in 1950), went on to found Lucy Cavendish College for mature women students in 1965. Records of the Third Foundation Association are thus not an official part of the archives of New Hall but are listed here for convenience of reference. A small but significant number of records relating to the Third Foundation Association is also held in the archives of Lucy Cavendish College, which also holds the records of the Dining Group: these partially document the split between the two groups and the reasons why some members of the Dining Group felt that they could not continue their relationship with the Dining Group following the establishment of the Third Foundation.
