Barlow Donation, 2005
Scope and Contents
Pages 189-194 of Bonhams sale catalogue for 28 April 2005, relating to the 'Barlow Donation', ie lots 422 and 423, being Iznik pottery dishes from the collection of Sir Alan Barlow. [Alan Barlow (1881-1968), civil servant and collector of Islamic and Chinese art, was the husband of Nora Barlow (1885-1989), who was the daughter of Horace Darwin and co-donor, with her sister Ruth Rees Thomas, of the Orchard (the Huntingdon Road site) in 1954.] The dishes were sold at this auction on behalf of New Hall as part of its 50th anniversary campaign to create an Art Fund, now known as the Barlow Art Fund. The catalogue pages are marked with the price fetched for the dishes - the two pieces together sold for £90,000.
