Colleges Fund / College Fees, 1997 - 1998
Scope and Contents
Papers and correspondence relating to the Dearing Report, July 1997, which proposed the introduction of tuition fees, the removal of the student maintenance grant, the introduction of student loans, and the review of College Fees at Oxford and Cambridge colleges, proposing that colleges should cease to receive College Fees direct from the Government. The papers include Anne Lonsdale's correspondence and papers relating to the specific effects on New Hall of the proposed cuts. They also include papers from meetings which AML attended at the HEFCE offices in London on behalf of the University. The papers extend into a wider debate on access and the likelihood of the Dearing proposals discouraging poorer students from applying. 1 file of cuttings and other media coverage, and 3 files of papers and correspondence. The cuttings file includes letters from AML to the press, including a proposed letter to The Observer, 5 December 1997, concerning New Hall's performance on University Challenge.
