Scope and Contents

'Report to the President 1943-1974. From Chipapa with love. By Merfyn Temple. August 29th 1974', 114 typescript and photocopied pages. The report is written in the form of a letter dated 5 August 1974, addressed to Kenneth Kuanda, President of the Republic of Zambia, State House, Lusaka. The sender's address is Chipapa Village, Chief Nkomesha, Central Province. The report makes recommendations for rural development and education in Zambia. It is accompanied by an undated and incomplete five-page typescript entitled 'Mr Jamieson's Report'.

Biographical / Historical

Merfyn Temple (b. 1919) was a missionary in Africa for 31 years, during which he worked as a Methodist minister in Zambia and became the first white man to explore the Kafue Gorge. In 2003, at the age of 83, he travelled to Zimbabwe to protest against the human rights abuses in the country, and was deported after a brief period in prison.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented by Dr David Phillipson, Director of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge University, 31 October 2001. Dr Phillipson received the report from Professor John and Mrs Norah Hudson, who had acquired it from Mrs Hudson's parents. Mrs Hudson's father, Dr Frank Hering, had worked in Zambia.
