Quintin Pye: 'Booke of Choise Secrets'
Scope and Contents
A volume of recipes and procedures, principally medical but including others relating to dyes and inks, compiled by Quintin Pye. Folio *a is headed ‘this is a booke of choise secrets. A proovid by me often. q p’. Folio 5 is headed ‘Chiefe Receits of Quintin Pye’. There are references to named patients, and recoords of applications of remedies dated 1641 and 1645. Folios 57-60 contain an index (‘The Table’).

Custodial History
The manuscript formed part of the library of the lawyer and nonconformist preacher Samuel Jeake (1623–1690). In the nineteenth century it was in the possession of the Frewen family. See Michael Hunter et al., eds, 'A Radical's Books: the Library Catalogue of Samuel Jeake of Rye, 1623-90' (Cambridge and Woodbridge: D. S. Brewer, 1999), xxii n., lxii n., 184-5, 315-16 n. The inner front board bears a slip with a printed heraldic motto 'Post spinas palma' and the manuscript initials 'T. W. W. S.' [i.e. T. W. W. Smart], and bookplates recording the ownership of Arthur Edmunds and Ann Ruel.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
This volume was donated by Dr Ann Ruel in memory of its previous owner, her great-uncle Arthur Edmunds FRCS (1874-1945).
Physical Description
The volume has original foliation ‘*a’ and 1–61, with later (nineteenth-century?) double end-papers. The second front endpaper is largely cut away, and the section which remains bears a pasted slip reading ‘Sa: Jeake pret 2s 6d’. Four slips of paper are loosely inserted in the volume: ‘Both the moistenes of nature in ye heat…’, found at ff. 9v–10r; ‘Sanicle, Scabious, Avens, Bugle, Rosemary…’, found at ff. 31v–32r (but see f. 24r); ‘Of letting blood’, found at ff. 51v–52r; and calculations in ounces, drams and scruples, found at ff. 52v-53r.
