Reference Code: GBR/0265/UA/Hare A.I, II

Scope and Contents

This is a two volume illuminated copy, probably that presented to the University by Hare in 1590, although it has been suggested that some of the heraldic devices included are of later date. The illuminations include elaborate title pages for the beginning of each reign; crude depictions of the Black Assembly (at f.clii recto) and the burning of weights and measures by the taxors (at f.cclxxvi verso); very elaborate introductory pages with portraits of popes, arms of the University and Colleges and of Hare. Hare's arms appear very frequently throughout. Preliminary matter includes: a letter of donation, mentioning John Copcot, Vice-Chancellor, as having urged Hare to the task; a dedicatory epistle with Hare's notarial signature; anathemae on anyone alienating the Liber from the University.
Foliation: Hare A.I . Preliminary matter has modern alphabetical foliation. The contemporary foliation changes from roman to arabic numerals and back again and repeats the number sequence in two places (417 ff., foliated a-z, aa-ee, i-lxxvi, 77-84, lxxvii-ccxx, 221-8, ccxxi-ccclviii, five final leaves unnumbered). Hare A.II. Preliminary matter has modern alphabetical foliation. The contemporary foliation is in roman numerals (449 ff., foliated a-n, i-ccccxxxv).
The hand is that of a professional scribal secretary, very regular.
In the case of both volumes, the text block is sewn all along on six double cords laced into wooden boards, with a primary covering of dark tanned skin. The secondary covering is reversed alum tawed skin. Mixed metal alloy furniture, including bosses and clasps, has been applied to the secondary covering. There are title labels under parchment on the right hand and left hand boards.
