Darling Harbour from Town Hall and University, 1870 - 1880
Scope and Contents
290 x 214 mm. A view from the top of the Town Hall looking south-west, showing the area around the junction of Kent Street and Druitt Street in the foreground, the southern part of Darling Harbour, and the University in the distance on the skyline. The wooden bridge, with sailing ships berthed at its eastern end, is the Pyrmont Bridge, part of the ‘Five Bridges Road’ which allowed travel between the city and the northern suburbs. The bridge was opened for traffic in 1858, and has a central swinging panel to allow for the passage of shipping. A new bridge was built in its place in 1902.
