The records relate chiefly to the accommodation service offered by the Society for Visiting Scholars and, to a lesser degree, to social events such as talks and outings. They include the records of the Newcomers Group.

Conditions Governing Access
The University Archives are generally freely available to the holder of a reader's ticket for the Manuscripts Reading Room at Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge CB3 9DR. Restrictions on access are imposed on certain categories of sensitive record: financial, governmental and personal, by order of the originating body or under data protection legislation. Access information, including opening hours and how to obtain a reader's ticket, appears as part of the Library's web site (www.lib.cam.ac.uk).
Biographical / Historical
The Society was established as an off-shoot of the Graduate Society in 1968 to assist senior academics from outside Cambridge in finding temporary accommodation and socialising, during short or longer periods of study at the University. In 2006, it combined with the Newcomers Group to form a new organisation, Newcomers and Visiting Scholars. It has a website at https://www.nvs.admin.cam.ac.uk/ (url correct as at October 2020).

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The records of the Society for Visiting Scholars were conveyed as a permanent transfer to the University Archives in batches from the Society's premises, 1972-96. Additional term cards, 2002, 2004-6 were presented by E. Leedham-Green on 7 August 2007 and added to VS/M 30. The records of the Newcomers Group were presented by Ella Assem Nicol, administrator, Newcomers and Visiting Scholars, on 19 March 2019 This body of records also included term cards for the Society of Visiting Scholars 1995-2006 which have been added to VS/M 30.
General
The online catalogue entry was completed in August 2006 and emended in August 2007 and January 2008.
