Scope and Contents

A collection of amateur photographic prints and negatives of the Sassoon and Gatty families, along with postcards and some paper items. The collection was found in a family cabinet and is thought to have belonged to Hester Sassoon (see email exchange at MS. Add. 9852/1/1/5).

They have been divided into two series: Gatty family and Sassoon photographs and negatives. Subjects include Sassoon (playing cricket, with hounds, resting, striking poses for the camera), Gatty family holidays (including rowing, parties, and scenic shots in Scotland, France, and elsewhere), country house scenes at Stanbridge, Fonthill, and elsewhere, portraits of family members (including Hester Gatty), babies, friends, and pets. Most photographs were taken by Hester Sassoon c.1920s.

Also, 129 postcards (of Normandy, Scotland, victory celebrations at the end of World War I, and other subjects), with related material: an appointment diary of a member of the Gatty family, 1926; a letter to Stephen Gatty, 1912; and a series of emails detailing the discovery of these photographs in a cabinet, 2001 (MS Add.9852/10/1/4/3).

Note: the original bundles have been maintained, although many were jumbled, with photographs appearing in one bundle while matching negatives were in another. Photographs and negatives are now housed seperately.
