Photographs, negatives and postcards, c.1889-1967

Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.9852/10

Scope and Contents

An extensive collection of Sassoon and Gatty family photographs and film negatives.

The first two sub-series represent two different family collections, each of which contained both Gatty and Sassoon family photographs and negatives. Most are amateur images, originally stored loose and in numerous original envelopes (MS Add.9852/10/1-2). Both collections include numerous images of Hester, Siegfried and baby George, including snapshots taken at Heytesbury house and on honeymoon. The first collection, which is thought to have belonged to Hester Sassoon, also includes a large set of postcards of Normandy and Scotland (MS Add.9852/10/1) and a photograph of Siegfried's brother, Hamo Watts Sassoon (MS Add.9852/10/1/2/1). Noteworthy in the second collection is a series of photographs of an elderly Sassoon in various comic poses (MS Add.9852/10/2/2/11)

Also catalogued here are a photograph album of Haus Hirth (MS Add.9852/10/3) and a collection of photographs showing Sassoon with Stephen Tennant, Rex Whistler, Glan Byam Shaw and others, which was donated by Sassoon's biographer, Max Egremont (MS Add.9852/10/6).
