JENKINSON, Eleanor Louisa 'Nelly', 1891-1910

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.10286/1/42

Scope and Contents

Three letters sent from 'Nelly' Jenkinson to Ida Darwin between December 1891 and August 1910. The first two letters were written ten days apart and are wholly concerned with discussion of her brother Francis and the difficulties he faces in considering marriage to 'Mildred' (whom, it is presumed, is a sister of his deceased wife Marian). Marriage between a man and his dead wife's sister was then forbidden until the passing of The Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act in 1907. The remaining letter dated 17 August 1910 offers congratulations to Ida on hearing news of Nora Darwin's engagement to Alan Barlow.
