Eleanor Louisa 'Nelly' Jenkinson was the daughter of John Henry Jenkinson (1823–1914), younger brother of Sir George Samuel Jenkinson, eleventh baronet, of Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, and of his wife, Alice Henrietta (d. 1859), daughter of Sir William Gordon Gordon-Cumming, second baronet, of Altyre and Gordonstoun, Moray, and sister of Roualeyn George Gordon-Cumming. Nelly's brother was the librarian and bibliographer Francis John Henry Jenkinson (1858-1933). Nelly remained unmarried and died on 23 September 1948.

Scope and Contents Three letters sent from 'Nelly' Jenkinson to Ida Darwin between December 1891 and August 1910. The first two letters were written ten days apart and are wholly concerned with discussion of her brother Francis and the difficulties he faces in considering marriage to 'Mildred' (whom, it is presumed, is a sister of his deceased wife Marian). Marriage between a man and his dead wife's sister was then forbidden until the passing of The Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act in 1907. The...
