Scope and Contents

Sent from 1 Portland Villas, East Heath Road, Hampstead, N. W. [the Radfords’ house], to Lizzie Rose in Paris. Thanking her for a letter and sending love to Father [Edward Rose]. Dorothy writes that: Edward Rose’s pun was very “chumish” but they all laughed; she wants some money; her mother was an early bird on Saturday; the rhododendrons are lovely, she just bought a new tortoise and has ordered a hedgehog (please send money to pay for them as Mrs Whiting said she need not pay until she gets the “hedger”, it will be about half a crown); she had been busy drawing with Hester and was getting better at line (she asks her mother to ask Father [Edward Rose] to get her a nice pencil or two for drawing); she sends love to Paris and says she would like to come but can’t; they had a ramble in Golder’s Hill and she went home to get her cool blouse, but Florence had just come with her clean clothes so she couldn’t find it and put on her new dress in revenge; Miss Gertrude Harradon is very ill; on Saturday they all (Mrs Radford, Hester, Margaret and she) went to Whetstone, to see Miss Buckland and it was very hot, her dress was admired.

In a second section written after supper, Dorothy writes that: she had just heard Miss Harradon is better and was glad; when they were on the ramble by the Leg of Mutton Pond, they met the Rices’ school rambling too [Charles E Rice, former head of King Alfred’s School broke away and set up West Heath School]; Maitland [Radford, Hester’s and Margaret’s brother] had just come home from a good day of tennis; their garden was looking very nice now, and she picked some flowers for Mrs Radford as there was no one at the garden to enjoy them; she was going to play catch with Margaret while Hester was doing her homework; Hester and Margaret were getting impatient so she had to go; and Hester, Margaret and Mrs Radford send love.

With a drawing of a plant with little people climbing about on it, and three girls watching a large frog.
