Letter to “Charlie” [Charles Sherrington, half- brother] from “Teddy” [Edward Rose], 2 July 1875
Scope and Contents
Sent from 4 Worcester Street, St. George’s Square, London. Telling Charles Sherrington that he believes a picture in Pendennis represents the Club he pointed out; the end of the Oxford and Cambridge match was “the most glorious affair on record”; he went to the Lyceum theatre for the 200th night of Hamlet, and Henry Irving had kept a stall for him (his excitement was comparable to when he won the mile race at Ipswich School sports day); a portrait of Henry Irving that they had seen was in that week’s ‘Sportsman’ (with a caricature of seated bald man in glasses); he hoped Charles was participating in school “Speeches” and he would play the Rising Sun well (doodle of a person with a face like the sun). Sending regards to Smith Minimus.
