Letter from McGowan, Harry to Ernest Rutherford, 1936-04-08

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.7653/1/i/A/15a

Scope and Contents

This is a carbon-copy of the copy letter enclosed in one from Rutherford to Walter Adams of the Academic Assistance Council at a date between [1936 April 08 and April 21] referred to by Adams in his of April 21 [MS Add.7653/1/i/A/16]. The copy is of Sir (later Lord) Harry McGowan's April 08 letter in which he refers to the previous correspondence between 'Mr Rogers' and Rutherford about the AAC. As Chairman McGowan states that ICI has done all that could be expected to help 'these refugees from German' but agrees that it is reasonable to help the AAC as the only organisation that can assist them. He offers £2,500 as a final contribution from ICI to 'tide over the difficulties'. The only stipulation that McGowan makes is that of this sum perhaps £100 'in the year' is given as special assistance to Professor Traube, whose work was of interest to the ICI Dystuffs Group, who is now in an Edinburgh nursing home.
